Policy and procedures

Feeling overwhelmed or stressed

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed, Flinders can help.

Counselling services

Flinders provides a free and confidential professional counselling service for students experiencing personal issues that are impacting on their study and overall wellbeing.

The counsellors are senior clinicians from a diverse clinical background, who work with students regarding issues such as:

  • anxiety or depression
  • drug or alcohol issues
  • family or relationship difficulties
  • grief and loss
  • sexuality
  • transition and academic issues
  • trauma

If you’re accessing the service for the first time, email counselling@flinders.edu.au with your name, phone number, Student ID and best time to contact you. A counsellor will then conduct an initial assessment, discuss possible steps to assist you, and can book a face-to-face counselling appointment.

If you have already accessed counselling and wish to rebook, please phone 8201 2118.

All counselling appointments are booked in advance and offered at the Bedford Park Campus. Limited services are available at the Sturt and Tonsley Campuses.

Student Learning Centre

If you are feeling overwhelmed with your studies, the Student Learning Centre (SLC) is an academic unit which offers support in the areas of academic writing, basic mathematics, Endnote and general study skills.

There are a range of services and resources available to assist you if you have any study or academic concerns, including:

Financial Pressure

If you experience financial difficulties, the Flinders University Student Association (FUSA) have a Financial Counsellor who can help you organise your finances, prepare a budget, and discuss options regarding debts.

We can also help you with emergency financial assistance and determine your eligibility to access an interest-free loan or a second semester grant.

The Flinders University Scholarships Program offers a generous range of scholarships for new and continuing undergraduate course students, in particular:

  • students from low socioeconomic backgrounds
  • students from rural and regional areas
  • Indigenous students

Student Learning Centre

The Student Learning Centre offers study and academic support.

You can use the Learning Lounge drop-in service or Studiosity for support with your study skills or assignments, or access a great range of resources online – visit Student Learning Centre for further details.

The Student Learning Centre also offers a two day Academic Preparation Program that has been developed to help get new students off to the best possible start at Flinders. Each session has been co-created by our academic staff and our students to give you the information and skills you will need while you are at University.

Student services and facilities

Flinders offers a wide range of services and facilities especially for students. We’ve provided some details, here, so that you can explore the offerings before you step on campus.

Student Study Spaces

There are a range of individual and group study spaces located around Flinders. Group study booths can accommodate up to 8 students to work on assignments and presentations. Each booth has full video conferencing facilities, so group assignment members can dial in from home or other campus locations. These are bookable online, while other spaces are open for casual access and need not be booked.

Oasis Cultural and Religious Services

Oasis offers a safe, friendly place to meet, make connections, and find friendship and support.

  • Drop-in to meet, greet and eat
  • Book the common room for an activity
  • Create an activity
  • Relaxation space
  • Visit the Muslim Prayer Rooms
    The male and female Muslim Prayer Rooms are located in Oasis and are available from 8:00am-9:00pm each weekday. Please see Lisa at Oasis reception to register for after-hours access. The large common room in Oasis is used for Friday prayer.

Student Hub & Plaza

The Student Hub is a fresh space in the very centre of our Bedford Park campus for study, socialisation, recreation and student services.  With a terraced Plaza and outdoor super screen, superfast wi-fi, quiet and group study spaces, and innovative design features such as charging points in lockers, the Hub is open 24/7 to ensure Flinders students get the most out of their University on-campus experience.

Food and Retail

A wonderful range of food and retail outlets are available across the Bedford Park, Sturt and Tonsley campuses to cater for a variety of tastes, budgets and needs, including:

Science Innovation Learning Centre (SILC)

The SILC is designed to support first-year science and engineering students with flexible spaces and open plan areas.

The environment helps students to engage in learning and share their experiences with others – it provides a focal point for students to study and interact. Classes are also taught using innovative teaching practices such as Peer Assisted Study Sessions.


The Flinders University Childcare Centre is a safe, healthy and nurturing environment where children are treated as unique individuals. Limited places are available, so we suggest you speak with the Centre about your individual needs.

Locker hire

Lockers area available for hire so you can safely store your personal belongings. They’re available on a short-term basis at no charge in the library and Student Hub. To gain access to the free short term lockers, you need to complete an online access request form.

Health services

Flinders’ Health Service is a fully equipped and accredited Medical Centre and is available to students and staff. The general practice:

  • is staffed by male and female medical practitioners
  • provides a full range of services, including first aid, health screens, vaccinations and referrals

All consultations are confidential and bulk-billed.

Bring your Medicare Card (Australian students) or, for international students, bring your Bupa or Allianz OSHC Card. For international students with a different private health insurer, you’ll need to pay up-front on the day of your appointment and have the money reimbursed by the insurer.


The Bedford Park campus Sports & Fitness Centre offers heavily reduced member access to Flinders students. Equipment and programs include:

  • free wellness programs, including boot camps, yoga and dance
  • weights room, cardio room, spin room and ladies-only gym
  • national university sporting competitions
  • elite athletes support and scholarships
  • a wide variety of sporting clubs
  • annual participation events
  • affiliated CrossFit
  • social sports

Flinders offers a range of mentoring programs, but it’s the Peer Mentoring program, which may be of particular interest to both new students (as mentees) and continuing students (as mentors).

Peer mentors are successful continuing students who can help new students settle into university life by providing tips and advice based on their own experience.
